I strongly support impeaching President Trump, for these seven reasons:
1) Hateful, divisive, and violence provoking messaging...so extreme it sounds just like fascism...and which already appears to been at the root of several mass shootings--the kind of violence which often leads to the rise of fascism.
2) Breaking the treaty with Iran, and ratcheting up pressure for a major new war in the Middle East.
3) Brutal sanctions and regime change maneuvers in Venezuela (I'm dreaming on this, because of course even the "lefter" Democratic Party wouldn't go for that, except a few like Tulsi Gabbard).
4) Pushing ahead with The Wall despite lack of congressional authorization or support
5) Mishandling refugees and immigrants at the southern border.
6) The Muslim Bans
7) Stuff in Syria (I'm really dreaming again) and continued drone bombings (likewise)
Aaron Mate has another short but good list of reasons to impeach Trump. Failed promises to (1) restore manufacturing jobs, (2) defend the working class, (3) fix healthcare, (4) drain the swamp, and for each one he provides mainstream media links.
Instead, Democrats have been constantly searching for the smoking gun which would convict the President in some sort of virtual court of moral authority, which would appeal to people of all persuasions (even racist xenophobic war mongers) because it looks like Watergate, that is, an ugly and transparent attempt to steal the election.
Election stealing has been the constant claim, since (well before) day one, in fact, back to 2015 when Brennan and others were plotting to show that Trump was a Russian Mole. After he had a lock on the nomination, of course.
The people who are doing this, like Pelosi, aren't dumb enough not to know the American Public has been vastly misled with all the phony Russiagate scandals. But they aren't going to even try to debunk that. Instead, they're playing their misinformed base even further onward with a kind of Russiagate and Watergate II. I don't blame Pelosi in one way, she was under steam roller pressure to do this by majority of Democrats. I myself was calling for impeachment, but for the High Crimes and Misdemeanors (would could mean exactly anything) I have described above, not the endless legalistic parsing of a Watergate-style impeachment. The Watergate schtick works if and only if you have something that looks like a real crime, like burglarizing the Democratic Party Headquarters, not just making a phone call. Well, of course, that was what Russiagate was all about in one thread, the alleged "hacking of the emails" which was itself faked by CrowdStrike using a contract Russian programmer working through Ukraine, and called FancyBear. Actual federal authorities were never allowed to investigate. In the end, this phony claim didn't result in any convictions. When various Russian groups demanded to clear their name, they were dismissed. None of which you hear on Comcast/MSNBC, of course, which like most mainstream media is totally committed to endless war against Russia, China, and everyone else who doesn't submit, which Russiagate was exquisitely engineered by the Deep State (including the Media itself) to fufill.
There are so many awful reasons for this wrongheaded approach I don't even know where to start.
1) Everyone, just everyone knows that the Senate will not convict Trump. Certainly not over the present allegations. It's hard to imagine the kind of misbehavior that would cause the Senate to allow Trump to be impeached, even the proverbial stabbing on 7th Avenue. So, this Impeachment! is bound to be a losing effort.
2) Even a losing effort isn't necessarily a bad idea, if it produces a proper teaching moment. There would be plenty of teaching moments in the my seven points for impeachment above--even if Democrats have done those things before we could say "No More!" But there is no teaching moment in Whistleblowergate, for multiple reasons.
a) Utter Hypocrisy ! The Democrats enlisted foreign agents, presumably foreign governments, in a multi-year effort beginning in 2015 to prevent Republicans from winning, first by boosting Trump in order to kill him as a Russian Mole later. This was the plan, hatched in 2015 if not earlier. We have the email from Brennan--the very center of the Deep State--to prove it.
b) Glass House ! Meanwhile, rather than following manufactured "evidence," the corruption Trump wanted to follow looks very real, and, in fact, it maligns a leading Democratic contender the deep state seems highly inclined to throw under the bus, though Biden certainly deserves that the most, and the sooner the better. But if Democrats are concerned about the reputation of their alleged leading contender, this would not be the thing to magnify with endless investigation, which are sure to be turned around on anti-Democrat media.
c) Elephants in the Room, there are so many. First of all US elections are fundamentally determined by the deep state, which owns all the secret agencies and secrets, the media organizations, the military industrial complex, and the billionaire plutocrats. These forces can and do legally spend unlimited funds to do that very thing--influence elections--and to the most nefarious ends of all. And then there is the giant among national lobbies, the Israel Lobby, which not only disproportionately influences elections, it virtually owns major politicians after they have been elected, especially including Trump. US elections are virtually an international joke.
d) Distraction ! There is plenty in the day to day record of Trump's activities (as I outlined above) to warrant total attention. Instead, this will be replaced by endless boring hyperventilating in Congressional Committees, which won't mean much in the end.
3) Everyone knows, at the end of the day, the effort to remove Trump via Congressional Action will not succeed. If it were done the way I would like, Impeachment would provide a Teaching Moment which would help reduce the threats of fascism, etc, in this country, now and in the future, by taking a stand. This effort won't change anything, because such investigatory malpractice that Trump is being accused of has gone on all along (but unconfessed). So it's really all about who can get away with what, through secrecy generally, and it is not establishing real statndards that can be enforced by social customs in the future (because how can social custom apply to what happens in secret?). There's no honesty here, and until there is full disclosure of previous crimes, a virtual "truth and reconciliation" moment, nothing good can possibly come out of a partisan slugfest.
4) All these issues will finally catch up with the show, to the end, that this is not only not likely to be helpful to the Democrats in winning the 2020 election, it will be dead weight. I had understood that to be similar to Pelosi's previous reasoning. But under the endless weight of fools and others, she was virtually forced to pander to the misinformed masses.
5) In fact, there are others who might like this ultimate effect of making the Democrats lose again. That is, as should now be clear, the DeepState plan, just as it was to elect Trump (but tie him down in knots). These are the others represented by the DeepState "whistleblower"--defeat the Democrats, especially Bernie or Warren who might well get the nomination now that Biden is being thrown under the bus anyway.
6) This Whistleblower is clearly a DeepState leaker, whose motives should be extremely suspect. Meanwhile, there are real whistleblowers, including Assange and Manning, who are treated like shit. The difference should be clear to all. When the actual DeepState agenda, or one of them, is supported, the leaker becomes an instant hero in the War Media.
Generally speaking, the best approach for the American People is simply to ignore all this Whistleblowergate crap. I would love to do that myself. Instead, I'm going to have to watch it unfold from more sides than most people. By the way, that's what you have to do, if you really want to understand things. For everyone else, I suggest listening to soothing music instead.
My anger comes mainly because, once again, the masters of Imperial Misinformation have hoodwinked all of my friends. This goes way back in my life. I suppose I should be angry because of the dead weight which I suspect this will stick to Democrats in 2020, with another 4 years of Trump made more likely. It's hard to be fully angry yet about something which still hopefully won't happen. On the other hand, if endless political investigation is shown to be a political losing card more decisively (previous results were mixed) that could be a teaching moment. Oops, I'm dreaming again. Inevitable structural forces mean we will have to look forward to endless political investigations perpetually, especially as long as we have nothing like real Democracy, for otherwise the process of stiffing us all from all sides would more obvious. And Imperial Misinformation will continue to be shaped, as needed, to control most people, and especially the more educated people like me who vote.
Here is the take from MoonOfAlabama. Sometimes he veers off into wishful speculation and prediction (my specialty) but this time he is 100% squarely on the facts, this is one of his best reports ever IMO.
Here's the most complete story by far, by Historian Eric Zuesse. Ignore everything I've said above, the reality is far more complex. Trump *wasn't* really pushing for the investigation at all, nor would it have been possible for Zelensky anyway, who principal backer has always been the target of the investigation. Everyone involved is as corrupt as hell, especially after US coup takes over the country, first you have the Democratic vulture billionaires, the the Republican vulture billionaires, and everything is a kind of proxy war of non-investigation of each other. Threats, if any, are to forestall investigations, so all the thievery can continue on all sides, no actor really wants it to blow up. In this scenario, the action of the CIA/Whistleblowergate is pure political theatre aimed at the US electorate.
The part where I disagree, however, is the CIA has no intention whatever of removing Trump by these actions. It will be a failure, and in the wake of that failure, and the lack of moral resonance with the underlying story, it will end up increasing the probability of re-electing Trump, as opposed to likely some less desired candidate on the Democratic side. The role of the MSM will be the same as last time, to loudly decry Trump as the arch demon of all civilized values, while giving his faux populism endless airtime. Who says we don't live in comic book.
Beyond some marginal effect on the election almost certainly in the desired direction, this Impeachment is pure distraction, to allow theivery to continue behind the curtain unabaited, in the US and Ukraine.
