It was known to anyone that knows anything that Iran hasn't had a nuclear weapons program since at least 2003.
Iran is run by religious zealots, and their Fatwa against nuclear weapons is above any other laws, and they aren't kidding.
They have a "uranium enrichment" program, which the nuclear non-proliferation and other treaties allow them to have.
Nevertheless, the media keeps up blaming them of what they don't have, usually implicitly (then other articles show it isn't true, as documented below). So the newest victim is always claimed to be some big figure in a "nuclear weapons program" that doesn't exist and perhaps never has.
Even the allegations of an Iranian nuclear weapons program in 2003 have been shown to be fraudulent (discussed below).
Iran's general military posture is defensive, to defend themselves and their Shiite brothers. They are not interested in taking over new territory, they are barely holding on to what they already have, already under constant threat. Meanwhile US is busy destroying any country that doesn't submit to US will (Iraq, Libya, Syria, Iran), and Israel is leading that edge by punishing anyone who desires self-defense. The actual fear of US/Israel is the Iranian conventional missile development--they might be able to defend themselves. But there are no laws against that, so they endlessly hype a non-existant nuclear weapons program as a way of justifying ongoing assassinations and bombings.
Clearly in this case, the assassination was about preventing future peace with Iran, including resumption of JPCOA under Biden.
You may recall Solemani was assassinated while holding peace talks. What was Fakhrizadeh doing recently?
Working on Iran's responses to Covid-19, including vaccination.
